Variations of the Lumbrical Muscles in Korean Adults

Abstract
The lumbrical muscles were studied by the dissections of 74 hands and 44 forearms in Korean cadavers,
At the same time the arrangement of flexor muscle tendons under the proximal portion of transverse carpal ligament were observed.
The results of present series were obtained as follows
1. The first lumbrical muscles differed from text dook description only in 4.1 % of the hands. The variations were observed in additional origin from flexor digitorum superficialiy. muscle tendons (2.7 %) and additional insertions in the base of the 2nd proximal phalanx (I.4 %) .
2. The principal varients of second lumbrical muscles were origins from the adjacents flexor digitorum profundus(Bipennate) in 14.9%, additional origin from radial synovial tendon sheath (1.4 %), split insertion (1.4 %), insertion in the base of the . proximal phalanx (1.4 %), and insertion in the transverse metacarpal ligament(1.4%).
3. The third lumbrical muscles were most variable in this series. The variations of the muscles were a split insertion in the ring and little fi.nger(20.3%), additional insertion in the base of the proximal phalanx(4.1%), insertion in ulnar side of the extensor expansion of the middle finger(5.4%), and there is no any other variations in its origin.
4. The variations of the forth lumbrical muscles were unipennate origin(1.4%), split insert-ion (19.1 %), additional insertion in the base of the proximal phalanx(2.7%), and insertion in the ulnar side of the extensor expansion of ring f inger(1.4 %).
5. The lumbrical musculature in individual hands presented normal textbook pattern(Type I) in 43.2 %.
9. In the arrangement of flexor tendons, it showed more frequent type in 43.2% that the tendon of the flexor digitorum sublimis destined for the third and fourth fingers lie superficially, those for the second and fifth finger are more deeply placed, and in the deepest part 4 tendons of flexor digitorum profundus lie side by side.
The distance between the flexor carpi ulnaris and flexor carpi radialis tendons of the each arrangement types were recorded.
